Temporary Outdoor Café

Location: Żelazowa Wola Park
Area: 150 m²
Year: 2023
Type: Commercial
Overview

Design & Experience

A 150 m² temporary café designed to harmonize with Żelazowa Wola Park. Fully removable and adaptable to the terrain and trees, it preserves the natural environment while offering a serene, open-air experience.

Organic, nature-inspired forms, lightweight modular construction, and eco-friendly materials create a sustainable and immersive space. Flexible seating and natural ventilation ensure comfort, while the café fosters a seamless connection between visitors and nature.

Design Process

From Research to Realization

Stage 1

Research

Understanding the Environment

The project began with an analysis of the site, focusing on the dense tree coverage, terrain, and natural light, to ensure the café could integrate seamlessly without disturbing the environment. Research explored organic, asymmetrical forms inspired by the irregular growth of trees, as well as lightweight, modular, and temporary structures that allow easy assembly and removal. Sustainable materials and natural ventilation strategies were considered to minimize environmental impact, while the spatial layout was studied to create a calm, immersive experience that connects visitors with the park.

Material & Form

Designing with Nature

The design emphasizes transparency and connection with nature. Glass skylights allow abundant natural light to fill the space, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Solid partitions are limited to functional areas such as the bar and restrooms, while the rest of the interior uses green curtains to maintain openness and a visual connection with the surrounding park. Green textiles, reminiscent of grass, and specially selected green plasters further enhance the immersive, natural experience, reinforcing the café's seamless integration with its environment.

Form Exploration

Organic Shapes

The form exploration was strongly influenced by the site's dense tree coverage, varying slopes, and the presence of a river, which required a careful search for an appropriate shape for the structure. The design process focused on developing an organic, irregular form that responds naturally to the terrain. The resulting concept embraces fluidity and softness, with smooth, rounded lines that harmonize with the surrounding landscape, allowing the structure to integrate seamlessly into its environment.

Spatial Design

Following the Form

The design of the interior spaces was guided directly by the underlying organic form. Rather than imposing rigid geometries, the layout emerged from the contours and flow of the envisioned shape, allowing the architecture to respond naturally to the form's curves and volumes. The space was organized around a column grid supporting the roof, skylights, and openings for the trees.
